Elina Agnes Johnsen (born 17 May 1986) is a Norwegian Sami singer, songwriter, music producer, and performance artist. She is well-known for her residency show which she performed in from 2012 to 2016. She has performed her songs in Northern Sami, Norwegian, and English.
She will represent Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest: Stockholm, with the song "Glemme (Vajálduhttit)", along with Jonas Martinsen.
Life and career[]
Early life[]
Johnsen was born on 17 May 1986 in Kautokeino. Her mother works as a schoolteacher, while her father is a reindeer herder. She grew up with two older brothers and a younger sister. She is a member of the Norwegian Sami community, and Northern Sami is her primary language.
Johnsen graduated from compulsory schooling in 2002, and began attending a gymnasium in her hometown. She graduated from gymnasium in 2005. After her graduation, she moved to Oslo in order to pursue a career in music.
2005–2010: Early career[]
After arriving in Oslo, Johnsen settled in the Grünerløkka borough. She signed with Norwegian independent record label Origo Sound in 2007. She released various electronic joik mixes from 2007 to 2010. Johnsen later revealed that she identifies her music "electronic forest pop", and revealed that she had little interest in releasing a studio album, as she preferred live performances.
2012–present: Residency show and Eurovision Song Contest[]
In 2012, she began a residency show in Oslo, where she performed her electronic joik mixes, along with having notable Norwegian musicians as guest performers. The residency show ended in 2016. In 2016, she released her debut studio album, which featured guest performances from various Norwegian singers, many of which performed with her during her residency show.
In 2017, she was confirmed to be taking part in Norsksong 1, with the song "Glemme (Vajálduhttit)", along with Jonas Martinsen. They qualified to the superfinal, where they ended up winning. They will now represent Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest: Stockholm.
